Mayor Michael Bloomberg said West Coast tech companies "are finding that New York is the place they need to be."

Palo Alto, California-based Facebook already has an office on Madison Avenue. The office in New York focuses mainly on advertising sales and employs around 100 people.

Sandberg would not say how many people Facebook plans to hire in New York but said it plans to add "thousands" worldwide in coming years.

The engineering office will be led by Serkan Piantino. He previously managed the engineering team behind Facebook's News Feed and built the infrastructure behind Timeline.
