Review your Facebook privacy after latest change

(MoneyWatch) Another day, another privacy change at Facebook. This one, though, was announced well in advance, so the privacy-savvy shouldn't have been caught off guard. On the other hand, most Facebook users don't compulsively monitor Facebook for privacy changes.

If you're in that latter group, you should be aware that as of last week, no one can any longer prevent users from looking you up by name. The old Who can look up your Timeline by name? privacy setting is gone.

  • Job-hunting? Time to scrub your Facebook page
  • Facebook Graph Search for you and your business
  • Facebook changes feed to aid the less boring

There are good reasons for that, not the least of which was to enable Facebook to wring the maximum value out of Graph Search. If you asked Facebook "People from Chicago who like Pink Floyd," the results would be of limited value if many of those people could opt out of the Graph Search results entirely.

You still have some control over your Facebook privacy, though. Don't forget that you can always go to the Privacy menu under Settings at the top of the Facebook page and choose Who can see my stuff? The most relevant options: You can control both the audience of future posts and past posts. (Note that to see the control for past posts, you need to go to the privacy controls in Settings - just clicking the nearby Privacy icon won't get you there).
