SkyDrive adds automatic photo uploads on iOS

(MoneyWatch) Microsoft has offered a SkyDrive app for iOS for quite some time, but it hasn’t been especially useful. A major new update to the SkyDrive app, though, makes it a must-have utility.

SkyDrive for iOS can now automatically upload your camera roll photos to the cloud. Yes, Dropbox can already do this as well, but there’s a good chance you have significantly more space on SkyDrive than on Dropbox. New SkyDrive users get a minimum of 7GB, and older users got 25GB for free.

The app has gotten a bit of a facelift, but the biggest change is the ability to upload photos from your phone. The feature isn’t enabled by default. The first time you run it after upgrading, you’ll get the option to turn on Camera Backup, and you can use the Settings control to specify if videos should also be backed up, and if the app should try to upload images over your cellular network (Wi-Fi is the default). Camera Backup will store your photos at full size unless you ask the app to re-size them for space.

This is a huge step forward for SkyDrive and a critical improvement for iOS users. If you haven’t used SkyDrive before – or you have installed it but never used it – check out the updated app today. If nothing else, storing your photos on SkyDrive will relieve the pressure on your more space-constrained Dropbox account.
