Malls go high tech to compete with online shopping for the holidays

Faced with stiff competition from online shopping sites, traditional brick-and-mortar malls are pulling out the stops to attract holiday shoppers.

At the Tyson's Corner Mall in Virginia, the wait to see Santa will be a lot more fun this year. There are video games, dancing Elves, and a machine that knows if you have been naughty or nice.

"They, of course, love coming to see Santa and it brings Santa into the digital age as well," said Tyson's senior marketing manager Bob Maurer. The mall says visits to see Santa are up 200 percent over last year.

Malls are also offering apps which let shoppers make dinner reservations, get discounts and even have their purchases delivered right to their door.

One shopper, Brooke Richardson, uses the app every time she comes to the mall. She gets special offers delivered right on her phone and can even text a concierge special requests like package delivery. Concierge requests are handled inside the mall's high-tech command center.

"It'd be really nice to not have to carry my packages home," Richardson told CBS News reporter Paula Reid.
