Photos reveal Google Glass 2.0 in the works
Its first incarnation might not have won over consumers, but Google Glass looks to be getting an update. A filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which regulates personal electronics, includes photos of the design for the next generation of the head-mounted wearable, CNET reports.
Google Glass, a delicate headset worn like a pair of eyeglasses, first burst onto the scene with much fanfare with a developer launch in 2012, before being made available to consumers the following year. But after tons of publicity and initial interest, the device -- with a price tag of a whopping $1,500 -- failed to catch on widely.
With this new version, Google may be moving the product more in the direction of the workplace than the home. Tech blog 9-to-5 Google reports that the next Google Glass would primarily be a business tool rather than something that would be for hobbyists or "Explorers," as Google dubbed the early enthusiasts.
The new device is called GG1 in the FCC filing and doesn't stray far from the original Google Glass design.
The Wall Street Journal and 9-to-5 Google report that this new version is believed to feature an Intel Atom processor, improved battery life, and improved wireless connectivity. It may be marketed directly to businesses, unlike the previous consumer version which Google stopped selling in January 2015.
