This is the fastest wireless carrier in the U.S.

Who's got the fastest wireless service in the U.S.? OpenSignal, a company that uses crowdsourced data to map wireless coverage across the country, says its findings show T-Mobile edges out the competition.

T-Mobile took top honors for wireless speed and the responsiveness of its 3G network, and was in a virtual tie with Verizon for 4G, with T-Mobile coming out slightly ahead in some large cities.

Verizon's 4G network ranked number one in terms of coverage.

How do the wireless speeds of each carrier measure up? T-Mobile's 4G tested at an average speed of 12.3 megabits per second, slightly faster than Verizon's 12 megabits per second. "AT&T and Sprint didn't even come close," the OpenSignal report said.

"The key here is that the past year has been the year of coverage growth for us," a T-Mobile spokeswoman told CNET.

One company that came away with no top ranking was AT&T, which is the second-largest wireless carrier in the U.S. Sprint was the top-ranked carrier for the responsiveness of its 4G network.

For the report, OpenSignal used data from 180,000 people who used its mobile app.
