'The Voice': John Legend tries to steal back Claudia B. after Mara Justine battle

It's not just the musical hopefuls on “The Voice” who get starstruck.

Team Legend singers Deejay Young, Lila Forde and Stee blew the coaches away during the third round of Knockouts Monday night with soulful performances of “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)” by Mint Condition, “Fire and Rain” by James Taylor and “Pretty Wings” by Maxwell, respectively.

But Stee had to polish up his showmanship before showtime. During rehearsals, coach John Legend advised the 34-year-old to work on his command of his vocal performance. “You want to be the focus of attention,” Legend said.

Stee was a clear standout to coach Gwen Stefani, who was mesmerized by the South Carolina vocalist’s stage presence. “You all are so incredible, but when Stee finished and did that whip-around, it was kind of like a drop-the-mic moment,” she said.

Stee’s Knockout opponent Forde won in the end, but Stefani wasn’t going to let her new fave walk out the door. Naturally, she hit the steal button and brought Stee onto Team Gwen.

“Stee is just a flawless singer. I wanted him since the blind (auditions),” Stefani said. “He just exudes this amazing positivity and joy.”

Here’s what else went down on Monday’s episode.

John Legend strikes out trying to steal Team Niall singers Claudia B., Noah Spencer

You don’t know a good thing till it’s gone, but Legend saw the writing on the wall.

Team Niall singers Huntley, Claudia B. and Noah Spencer delivered powerhouse renditions of Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive,” the Norah Jones ballad “Don’t Know Why” and “Where Rainbows Never Die” by The SteelDrivers.

Coach Niall Horan was overwhelmed by the trio’s strong performances. “I have zero idea what I’m going to do,” he said. “I hope I don’t regret any of this.”

Horan declared Huntley the Knockout’s winner, but the Virginia vocalist wasn’t the only member of Team Niall who’d be moving forward. Legend hit his steal button for Claudia B., a former Team Legend contestant, while Horan pressed his save button to keep the Tennessee songstress.

Legend, who chose Mara Justine over Claudia B. in the Battles round, previously said his decision “may come back to haunt me.” “I feel like I really understand the style of music that you want to do, and I feel like I can really help you get there,” Legend told Claudia.

But it was too little, too late for a reconciliation, as Claudia chose to remain on Team Niall. “She’s all mine now,” Horan said of the victory.

Legend also struck out with Spencer when he went head-to-head with coach Reba McEntire to steal the 20-year-old country singer. Spencer chose the Queen of Country to be his new coach.

“I don’t think we’ve touched on a fourth of his talent yet,” McEntire said of Spencer. “I can’t wait to see what he’s going to sing next.”

John Legend ‘finally’ steals Kristen Brown after emotional performance

Team Gwen’s CORii, Kara Tenae and Kristen Brown brought the girl power with electric covers of “Ain’t It Fun” by Paramore, “Leave (Get Out)” by JoJo and “This One’s for the Girls” by Martina McBride, respectively.

Brown charmed the coaches with her heartfelt performance of the country anthem, although the California singer’s voice faltered slightly when she got caught up in the song’s emotion.

“I did notice that second half vocally wasn’t your sweet spot, but I didn’t care because if I were a girl, I would relate to you right there,” Stefani told Brown.

Brown’s vulnerability wasn’t enough to score her a Knockout victory, however, as her opponent Tenae was declared the winner.

But before Brown could finish her goodbyes onstage, Legend hit his steal button to bring the 24-year-old onto his team — and find redemption for his unused steal.

“I finally used my steal on Kristen,” Legend said. “She’s been so good throughout all the rounds of the competition. I know she’s going to do well in the future.”
