The Daily Money: Scarlett Johansson says AI took her voice

Good morning! It's Daniel de Visé with your Daily Money.

The nerve of some AIs.

Actress Scarlett Johansson is threatening Sam Altman and his company OpenAI with legal action, Bailey Schulz and Jessica Guynn report, alleging they copied her voice for ChatGPT without her permission.

Johansson, who provided the voice of the artificial intelligence assistant in the 2013 science fiction movie “Her,” said ChatGPT’s “Sky” voice is so eerily similar to hers that her closest friends could not tell the difference.

Johansson said Altman asked her to be the voice of his AI system and, when she turned him down, he copied her voice anyway.

Here are the details.

The operators of 99 Cents Only Stores recently announced they would close all 371 locations, Bailey Schulz reports.

The announcement came on the heels of news that nearly 600 Family Dollar locations are set to close this year. Another 400 stores under the Family Dollar and Dollar Tree banners are slated to shutter in the coming years as their leases expire.

Despite the large number of stores being shuttered, experts who spoke to USA TODAY say these closures don't mean the end of dollar stores ‒ despite some pushback from critics. Here's why.
