41 people were taken to the hospital after a mass food poisoning incident at the ByteDance office in Singapore on Tuesday (July30).

ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, experienced this issue after employees consumed food from an in-house caterer.

TikTok is a popular social media platform known for its short video content.

Those affected reported symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.

Immediate Response

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received an alert around 2:10pm and dispatched multiple ambulances to the scene.

An SCDF spokesperson stated, “We immediately provided first aid and transported those in need to the hospital.”

The affected employees were taken to various hospitals for further treatment.

Investigation Underway

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is investigating the cause of the food poisoning.

Food samples from the ByteDance office have been collected for testing.

A spokesperson from ByteDance said, “We are cooperating fully with the authorities to determine the source of the contamination. The health and safety of our employees are our utmost priority.”

Company’s Action

ByteDance has temporarily suspended the use of the caterer pending the outcome of the investigation.

The company assured, “We are taking all necessary measures to ensure such incidents do not happen again in the future. Our employees’ well-being is paramount.”

Past Incidents

This is the second major incident of food poisoning in Singapore within a week.

The first incident involved the SCDF, where 165 personnel fell ill after consuming food from a different caterer.

Support for Affected Employees

ByteDance is providing support to the affected employees, including covering medical expenses and offering counselling services.

“We are committed to supporting our team during this time,” the company added.
